We didn’t know it then –
when the skies were blue
the sun warm on our backs
that they would be the last days.
If we’d known
maybe we’d have remembered
to look for a little longer
to sit in the sun
and just enjoy the warmth
maybe we’d have relished
the setting sun, committed the colours
to our memories
and sat a little longer
before we turned away.
But by the time we realised
it was too late
and the sun had gone
and we had squirreled away
just remembering
the last day of summer.
